GTA VI Will Feature Hurricanes and Over 170 Animal Species Across Leonida

GTA VI is pushing Rockstar's environmental simulation much further. Leonida will contain more than 170 animal species alongside localized storms, tropical storms and hurricanes.

The new details come from Game Informer's GTA VI cover feature, created after conversations with several lead designers at Rockstar Games. The ambition is not simply to build a larger or more detailed Vice City: Rockstar is attempting to make the fictional state of Leonida feel like a changing environment.

More than 170 species across land, air and water

According to the published information, more than 170 animal species inhabit Leonida. The selection reflects both wildlife associated with Florida and invasive species that have become part of its ecosystem. Examples include alligators, manatees, flamingos, pelicans, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques.

Rockstar is also expanding its animal rendering technology with effects including iridescence, bioluminescence and translucency, alongside different feather, hair and fur treatments. The feature also describes special wildlife categories including Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, although Rockstar has not yet detailed which animals belong to them.

Storms can happen away from the player

The weather system introduces another important change. GTA VI can produce localized storms, meaning Jason or Lucia may stand beneath clear skies while rain and storm clouds are visible elsewhere in the distance.

The world can retain evidence of that weather after the storm has passed, including wet surfaces and persistent puddles. Rainbows may also appear under suitable lighting conditions.

Hurricanes in Leonida

Most strikingly, the system includes tropical storms and hurricanes, a natural fit for a state inspired by Florida. Rockstar has not yet explained how often major storms occur or whether they directly affect missions, traffic or NPC behavior.

An evolution of the Red Dead Redemption 2 philosophy

The comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2 is inevitable. That game made wildlife, weather and landscape meaningful parts of exploration. GTA VI appears to bring that philosophy into a much denser contemporary world where roads, cities, wetlands, coastlines, traffic and wildlife all need to coexist.

That does not mean GTA VI has a Red Dead Redemption 2-style hunting system. Nor do we know whether hurricanes can destroy buildings, permanently flood parts of the map or alter missions. Those possibilities remain speculation.

CONFIRMED: 170+ animal species; land, air and aquatic wildlife; special animal categories; localized weather; persistent wet surfaces and puddles; rainbows; tropical storms and hurricanes.

ANALYSIS: combining wildlife, weather and environmental persistence could make exploration a much more important part of Leonida.

NOT CONFIRMED: hurricane destruction, permanent flooding, persistent map changes, major-storm frequency or a hunting system equivalent to RDR2.

Why it matters

Better graphics can make a world look more realistic; interconnected systems can make it feel alive. A storm falling miles away, a road still wet from rain the player never saw, or a rare species hidden in the wetlands are small events individually. Together, they could become one of the clearest generational differences between GTA V and GTA VI.
